Glenn Frey is putting out a new album!!

Glenn said tonight at the Fallsview Casino show that he had been working on an album of covers called After Hours which would contain his interpretations of some favorite songs spanning the decades from the twenties to the sixties. He said it was mostly done and he hoped it would be out around Valentine's Day. More details here.

Glenn becomes involved in "12 Bands - 12 Kids" Cancer Charity Project

The following is excerpted from the Augusta Chronicle:

"In January, 12 Bands launches its 12 Bands-12 Kids campaign. Each month, a musician will be paired with a child fighting cancer. The artists will use their Web sites and social media to share that child's story, raise awareness of pediatric cancer and provide links to donate. The campaign starts with Collective Soul in January, the Zac Brown Band in February and Charlie Daniels Band in March. Glenn Frey will close out the campaign next December."

Glenn turns 62 today. Hope he has a great birthday! He certainly deserves it. Still awesome after all these years! As that little girl next to me in Aspen last month hollered at the Party of Two concert, "KEEP ROCKING GLENN FREY!" (She was too cute!)

In other news, this site is now 5 years old (I officially opened it on Glenn's birthday in 2005). Dang! I might have to make a few changes around here design-wise so it doesn't get stale. Watch this space...

Glenn has been popping up all over the place this past week. In addition to the previously mentioned Lupus Gala where he and Cindy Frey were honored and where he performed with Joe Walsh (see some photos here; more have been posted on The Border), he's been spotted at two Lakers games and participated at the 3rd Annual George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic (more photos here and posted on The Border). Guess he had to have his fun while he could because the Eagles are playing another spate of shows starting tonight in Vancouver.

Love this version of Take It to the Limit from 1986 in Tokyo. It's a very dramatic arrangement - I especially like the use of the piano and sax - and Glenn really gets into it. Towards the end, when it all comes together, building, picking you up and throwing you against that full stop when it suddenly all drops away for the last line... Awesomeness!

6 Days 'Til 60!

Glenn Frey is turning 60 in just 6 days! To celebrate, we're going to do a little something every day until the big day, November 6. I'm going to go decade by decade, starting with the Longbranch Pennywhistle era of the late 60s. So let's take a step back in time to 1968-1969, when our hero was just becoming old enough to legally drink.

One of Glenn's friends, author Thomas Sullivan, got to spend the weekend with him up in the Brainerd Lakes region (lovely place) in addition to seeing the show, and he wrote a bit about it on his "Storytellers Unplugged" blog entry (scroll down to the last big paragraph starting with "There is another nature story..") Trivia buffs and hardcore Frey fans may remember that Thomas Sullivan is the guy who came up with the phrase "moral malnutrition" which Glenn borrowed for I've Got Mine, and he is thanked in the liner notes.

Glenn to play Manhattan Beach, Minnesota June 14!

The Manhattan Beach Lodge has notified the Manhattan Beach City Council that Glenn Frey will be playing there this Saturday, June 14! The lodge is located in Manhattan Beach, Minnesota. This is pretty last minute, but if you'd like more details on how to get tickets, go to their site here.

I called the venue and found out some more information on Glenn's April 11 show at the Roxy in Los Angeles, Calfornia.

The show starts at 8:00; doors open at 7:30.
General Admission tickets are $25 if you pre-order, $30 if you pay at the door. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Roxy, a general admission ticket means that you're going to be standing in a tightly-packed throng of people in front of the stage - first come, first serve. I have heard some say that they managed to grab an unreserved table with a GA ticket, but the Roxy insists that won't happen. If you're lucky, you'll get right up next to the stage. There is officially a two-drink minimum, although I've heard some say that enforcement is sketchy for a GA ticket holder - unless he/she tries to sit down. Those under 21 will have to pay an additional charge of $3 since their non-alcoholic drinks are cheaper.
VIP tickets are $75. According to the employee I talked to, "VIP" means that you get to take advantage of some booths and limited seating in a "VIP section" in the back. Booths and tables are shared. Only 21 and over are allowed to get VIP tickets. There is a two-drink minimum which is not included in the price and is enforced (unless you're a big shot). Apparently big shots do indeed buy tickets and sit in the VIP section on occasion, but no promises (obviously the employee was pushing the VIP tickets).
The show is not listed on Ticketmaster, so the only way to get tickets is to call the box office. The number is (310) 278-9457. The box office is open from 10:30 am - 5:30 pm California time.
There are a lot of acts, so sets will be short. As the headliner, Glenn will probably play six or so songs, according to the employee I talked with.
And last but not least, if you scroll down on the Roxy's Upcoming Shows page, you will see a poster that gives the names of the other people at the show. It's quite an unusual mix. Besides Glenn, those listed are:
- Don Was of Was (Not Was) - remember "Walk the Dinosaur"? Interestingly, he is more known as a producer and has produced Glenn, yet he's given top billing along with Glenn as a performer.
- Daniel Powter whose main claim to fame is the hit "Bad Day"(see his official site)
- Inara George and Greg Kurstin, aka the alternative duo The Bird and the Bee (see their official site)
- Robert Francis, who calls his style of music tango/thrash (see his MySpace)
- Hello Stranger (see their MySpace)
- Test Your Reflex (see their Myspace)
- Shwayze, who bill themselves as rap/hip/hop/indie (see their Myspace - scroll down)
- Under Glenn's name in smaller print, presumably as part of the band, the familiar name Michael Thompson
- Also under Glenn's name and presumably backing, Glenn's son Deacon!

It promises to be a unique experience. How many times are you gonna see this mix - heck, Glenn Frey alone, for that matter - for $25 (if you brave the sweaty, hot, teeming throng of twenty-somethings pressing against you from all sides in a small area with negligible air conditioning) or for $75 tops (if you'd rather sit in comfort, away from the stage)? Even if you imbibe several of their overpriced drinks, you're doing pretty good. It's a historic venue, after all, and is said to have good sound. Plus, it's for a good cause. Might even be worth travelling for.

Tickets are on sale now - better get one before it's sold out.

I know I've been remiss - letting a whole month go by without updates - but it's crunch time for the dissertation and I've had to mete out my time carefully. Without further ado, some recent news and updates...

According to the LA Times, Glenn will play the "Keep A Child Alive" benefit on April 11. The organization helps children suffering from AIDS in Africa.
According to the Associated Press, Glenn's mother and father donated an acoustic guitar signed by the Eagles to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. They said they were motivated by the fact that Glenn grew up in the Boys and Girls Club in Detroit when he was younger.
An update of the Multimedia Downloads - an MP3 of Tequila Sunrise, a HFO outtake, and a video of Glenn doing Desperado with the Little River Band in Australia, 1988.
And isn't this a cute photo of Glenn Frey with Stevie Nicks circa 1976? My heroes! Oh yeah, Elton John and his guitarist Davey Johnstone, too.

Just came back from the Pebble Beach practice day - Glenn was kind enough to share some info with us at a break in play. The news:

Glenn is not going to be able to do Broadway this year after all. The success of the album coupled with the stagehand strike made the timing impossible. He has, however, been approached more than once to play the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago in the past... who knows for the future... but there are no plans at this time.
Glenn says that he might do a solo album of standards at some point in the future - songs from his parent's generation.
The Eagles are going to play a couple of dates at Madison Square Garden in New York City sometime after the Atlanta shows.

We saw Glenn interviewed, so it's possible there could be some footage of him - keep an eye out!

Apparently Glenn at least gets a mention in Steve Martin's memoir, according to the Columbus Telegram:

"He tells of meeting Glenn Frey at the Troubadour club in Los Angeles and argues with him about the name of Frey’s group. Frey says it is 'Eagles.' Martin insists it’s 'The Eagles.' Martin concludes the anecdote: 'The name of the group, remains, of course, Eagles.'”

Another one from Thomas - you can't really see Glenn's face, but you get a view of the infamous Longbranch Pennywhistle jeans - the ones that look like he made the patches out of some really ugly curtains. This begs the question - were these the only jeans Glenn owned? It could be worse, though. He could be wearing the striped pants Beland is sporting (to be fair, remember this was 1968 - these clothes were considered "groovy").

Just teasing. Happy birthday Glenn! To celebrate, I've gotten caught up on all those updates I've been meaning to do, with the addition of a few special treats.

First off, just for fun, here's a video of JD Souther wishing Glenn a Happy Birthday at a Houston show in 1976 (this is becoming a birthday tradition).

In other multimedia news, I've put up on the downloads page a video of Before the Ship Goes Down from San Diego 1992. It's not the best quality, but as Glenn says in it, "We have to extract joy from living every single day" - appropriate for a day such as this. Also, I've put up an MP3 of Ol' 55 from the Kirshner Rock Concert in 1974. OK, he's 59 not 55, but who's counting? As he has said, "After 40, age is just a number you hide from."

Glenn Does Big Band?

According to this interview in USA today, Glenn may release an album of big band music! I've been eager for a solo album, but I didn't expect this. My daddy put himself through college playing a trumpet in a big band, so I grew up with that music despite the fact that it was way out of style when I was a kid. I'm jazzed about it!

Well, whaddya know! According to this Henley interview, Glenn is going to act in a Broadway play! Sally, the webmistress of Rockphiles, has done some more research and discovered that the play is probably Chicago and the role is probably Billy Flynn. Pretty cool! However, I should note that no official announcement has yet been made, and I'm unsure when his run will start.

I couldn't sleep last night (as usual) so I wound up spending some time making Glenn Frey ringtones (scroll down to solo). There's quite a few new ones, actually. My favorite is the new one I made from "That Girl" - "raindrops are fallin', and I feel like callin' that girl." Appropriate for females!

I'm advising everyone who wishes to pre-order to do so through the band's official site instead of Walmart. When I did not receive my download of How Long from Walmart after two days, I called customer service. I was informed by a Walmart representative that it can take up to a week for a person to get the free download of How Long. By contrast, the official site is able to give it to you immediately upon purchase.
